Spanish is the second-largest language in the world in terms of native speakers (after Mandarin Chinese). For native Spanish speakers, is easy. Wejust simply acquire the language effortlessly at a young age. For the rest of people, however, the situation is different. Today I´m going to talk about some of the hardest things about learning Spanish and give you some clues to make it easier.
Language evolution is passionant.
As a Spanish teacher I´m comfront everyday to similitudes and differences between Spanish and my students mother tongue languages: English, Italian French, Russian, Arabic, Chinese. Thai… etc etc.
As a plyglot, I´ve been in your position as a language learner and after working on differents techniques a can say without a doubt that this are the most efficient ways to understand a new language (100% applyable to learn Spanish, of course)
– Identify the similar concepts from your mother tongue and use it on your own benefit.
When I´m working on a new concept with one of my students and I see the person struggling with the idea, the question I make is: How does this work in your mother tongue? I don´t want them to literally translate. I want them to understand their own language to be able to understand Spanish. Once they get that, new rules are easy(peasy).
– Think as a native
People love theory. People love list of verbs and grammar clasifications and rules. I have a question about that: Did your parents teach you all that when you were 1 year old and you were saying your first words in English?(or whatever your mother tongue is of course ^^ ). The answer is OBVIOUSLY a big NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. With all this Os. Absolutly NOT. I don´t even remember how many times I´ve faced questions like: ” we use el subjuntivo when there´s a subordinate sentece with a different subject from the main sentence, right?” eeeeeeeeeeeeeeuh When I hear that I only want to say I DON´tKNOW! But… as a teacher it wouldn´t sound very professional I guess. So I had to find an anwer to those type of questions. At the beggining I shared This beautuful full of informations lists and I prepared the “official” explanation. But how to make someone believe in something that you don’t apply yourself? I don´t know by heart all the uses of SER, how can I ask someone to learn it? It´s hypocrit. And I´m not like that. I found another way, I analyzed my logic as a native Spanish speaker and I share my feelings with my students. You know what? IT WORKS
Now that we are in the same page…
How am I going to help you with specific Spanish concepts and way of thinking?
